GSM-IGM Flagship on Geoscience to Action: Disaster Risk Reduction – The Emerging Market for Geoscience Entrepreneurs?
The discourse will commence with a short presentation on the status of disaster risk reduction in Malaysia and the region by Prof. Joy Jacqueline Pereira, who is currently involved in developing the National Disaster Risk Reduction Action Plan in conjunction with the National Security Council of the Prime Minister’s Department. This will be followed by an introduction to the GSM-IGM Flagship on Geoscience to Action for Disaster Risk Reduction (G2A4DRR), which aims to define, repackage, incubate and market potential geoscience technology, tools and services for targeted end-users.
The GSM-IGM Flagship, with technical support from UKM’s Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Institute (SEADPRI-UKM) and University Malaya’s Geology Department, will also serve to mobilise coordinated measures underpinned by geoscience, particularly engineering and environmental geology, to address the risks of climate related hazards, which will vary across industry sectors and regions. The concluding informal discussion is intended to lay the foundation for future activities of G2A4DRR and identify the potential for geoscience driven public-private participation in disaster risk reduction.
