Workshop on Science for Managing Disaster Risks
Under the aegis of the GSM-IGM Flagship on Disaster Risk Reduction (G2A4DRR), which is funded by the Newton-Ungku Omar Fund via the initiative on “Future Cities: Science to Action for Building Resilience of Urban Communities to Climate Induced Physical Hazards"; GSM, IGM, SEADPRI-UKM, University of Cambridge, UM and other project members are convening the Workshop on Science for Managing Disaster Risks on 9 March 2016 (8.30 am – 1 pm) at PJ Hilton in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
The workshop will provide the platform for understanding scientific needs and priorities of financial entities for managing disaster risks and identify barriers that limit the penetration of disaster risk insurance in Malaysia. Key partners invited to co-organise the event include the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA), General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM), Malaysian Association of Risk and Insurance Management (MARIM) and Malaysian Industry Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT). The Science Advisor to the Hon. Prime Minister has also been invited to deliver the keynote address. We expect some 30 key targeted participants to attend the workshop. The findings is intended to be channeled to the Scientific Expert Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction chaired by the Science Advisor to the Hon. Prime Minister, as part of the National Science to Action (S2A) iniatitive.
The organisers have allocated 10 spaces for representatives of GSM (max 5 persons) and IGM (max 5 persons) at the workshop. There is no registration fees but participation is limited on a first-come-first served basis. The response should be sent DIRECTLY to the GSM Secretariat Ms. Anna Lee, and the deadline is
1 March 2016. The tentative programme is enclosed.
